Strategic HR Management is the Strategic Approach to Employee Management

It is argued that the term strategic HR management emerged from human resource management.

But there are writers who had argued that these developed separate from each other. It appears there is no difference except that Strategic HR Management makes it clear that strategies are employed.

The use of strategies in HR began a few decades ago at a time the term personnel management was used for people management.

Based on the newly-found strategic HR management framework, some companies started to refer to their employees as "human capital", having accepted them as their most important asset. They were seeking for ways to enhance their competitive advantage through effective people or hr management.

ROI of Human Resource
Organizations expect good return from the utilization of human resource just as they do in the case of financial capital employed.

ROI (Return on Investment) is used to measure how effective human resource is helping organizations in accomplishing their objectives.

HR Strategic Role
Strategic management of employees emphasizes the HR strategic role. This stems from the argument of many "gurus" on HR strategic importance.

One of the foremost things we need to know is the scope of the strategic HR management and how successful organizations are leveraging their success on strategic human resource management.

How did strategic HR management come about?
In the late 1980s, many writers began the search for more effective ways in managing people.

From there, many companies began to realize that their survival depended very much on their employees and how effectively they are managed.

In their book "Strategic Human Resource Management: Corporate Rhetoric and Human Reality", Lynda Gratton, Veronica Hope-Hailey, Philip Stiles and Catherine Truss identify certain key features of strategic Human Resource management, namely that-

  • there is some linkage between HR policy and practices and the company’s aims and organizational environment
  • there is a link between individual HR interventions so as to be mutually supportive of each other
  • much of the management of human resource is devolved down to the front line

Strategic HR Plan
Planning is an important part of strategy, its formulation and linkages to organizational activities and plans.

Using strategies in your human resource planning can help accomplish the organizational planned objectives.

Moving Towards a Common Goal
Optimization of the HR function lends its weight towards achieving your organization's strategic plans.

Align it to the corporate mission, values and strategies, so as to push your organization in the direction towards success.

Simply put, strategic HR management helps ensure that your organization achieves its strategic plan.

Success is a long-term objective.

Once your organization reaches one level of accomplishment, proceed to attempt the next higher level.
