An Education-Employment Fit
Helps Employees as well as Employers

It is important that there is education-employment fit.

The type of qualification and scope of knowledge required have to change as jobs scope and jobs complexity change.

More specialized training is necessary as jobs become more technical in nature. New needs of industries require new technological discoveries. As stakeholders' demands become more intense due to economic and financial pressures, more effective ways of managing people are needed. All of these require the right expertise.

Globalization and a mobile workforce are also relevant matters to take into consideration.

A proper plan is needed to achieve the ideal education-employment fit. The objective is to make this one of the long term goals.

This plan must take into consideration the importance of adequately preparing students to become productive members of the workforce once they leave college with quality education and equipped with the right qualifications.

You may find that many graduates do not truly fit into the jobs that they are recruited for. Sometimes, employers have no choice but to select the best from a group of candidates most of whom do not fit the specifications for the jobs advertised.

The following are the players who can ensure that change in approach is made and that it remain permanent.

  1. The government of the Day.
It is responsible for enacting the necessary law and determining educational policies, thereby facilitating education-employment fit.

  2. Institutions of Higher Learning.
These institutions need to offer courses of study leading to qualifications needed by businesses.

  3. Students.
They need to remain true to their chosen profession. If not, what they had learned will go to waste. Employers, whether the government or private enterprises, will lose out and will find it hard to achieve their objectives.

  4. Employers.
They need to ensure that candidates who possess the right academic background are recruited.

Once in service, employers need to ensure that they make use of the knowledge and expertise of these employees. Employees can become dysfunctional if they are made to take up jobs that have little connection with their academic background and skills.

In order to accomplish the ideal position where there is a close connection between education policies and employment needs, it is necessary that there is cooperation and collaboration between state's educational authority, the academic community, market players, and other interested parties when preparing an education plan. Coordination of activities is a necessary ingredient in making the plan succeed.

Members of the general public also play an important role in supporting the intention to achieve an acceptable level of education-employment fit.
